Late-Night Meeting Between Rival Nationalist Congress Party Leaders and Chief Minister Fuels Fresh Political Speculation in Maharashtra
Six months after Ajit Pawar's death, Maharashtra politics has entered a new phase of uncertainty as rival Nationalist Congress Party leaders meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, triggering speculation over internal divisions, possible reunification, defections, and shifting political alliances ahead of key legislative developments and future power equations in the state.
Following Ajit Pawar's death, his wife, Sunetra Pawar, was elevated as the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party faction headed by him and also assumed his position as Deputy Chief Minister. The move initially prevented a prolonged leadership dispute and projected unity within the organization. However, as the political situation evolved, signs of dissatisfaction began emerging within the party.
National Secretary Sachchidanand Singh has publicly challenged Sunetra Pawar's appointment as party chief, questioning the procedure through which she assumed the position. He described the process as "illegal, non-existent, and void," exposing growing internal disagreements within the organization.
Uncertainty is also surrounding the future of the original Nationalist Congress Party founded and led by Sharad Pawar for 24 years. According to sources, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, an ally of the Ajit Pawar faction, is seeking support from Members of Parliament aligned with Sharad Pawar to secure the passage of key legislation during the ongoing Parliament session. Such a development has intensified speculation over the possibility of another political rebellion, similar to the recent split within the Shiv Sena, during which six Members of Parliament switched allegiance.
Against this backdrop, a late-night meeting involving leaders from both rival Nationalist Congress Party factions at the official residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has attracted significant political attention. The meeting continued for more than an hour and has generated widespread speculation regarding its purpose and possible consequences.
Representing the Ajit Pawar faction, Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare arrived first. They were later joined by Jayant Patil, a senior leader from the Sharad Pawar faction. The timing of the meeting, amid growing uncertainty over the future of both groups, has revived discussions about a possible reunion of the divided Nationalist Congress Party.
Such a political realignment could significantly reshape Maharashtra's political balance. If the Ajit Pawar faction consolidates control, it could strengthen its bargaining position within the ruling Mahayuti alliance and demand a greater share of political influence, where it has so far remained the junior partner. Conversely, if the Sharad Pawar faction gains the upper hand, it could weaken the ruling alliance while strengthening the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi by offsetting losses resulting from the recent split in the Shiv Sena.
Officially, the meeting was described as being related to the disqualification proceedings involving the President of the Islampur Municipal Council. Jayant Patil told reporters that he attended the meeting for "not more than 15 minutes" and stated that the discussion concerned the municipal issue. Leaders from his faction also maintained that the meeting with the Chief Minister was routine.
However, political observers have noted that Jayant Patil had also met Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Vinod Tawde the previous week, further fueling speculation about a possible division within the Sharad Pawar faction. Reports have also suggested that Patil has conducted individual discussions with legislators from Sharad Pawar's camp to assess their willingness to support a political shift toward the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Leaders within the Ajit Pawar faction have interpreted these developments differently. A former legislator from the faction, speaking anonymously, said that three senior leaders from two rival factions meeting the Chief Minister late at night could not simply be dismissed as a coincidence.
Whether the developments ultimately result in a political realignment remains uncertain. For now, senior Sharad Pawar faction leader Supriya Sule has firmly rejected speculation about any alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. She stated that numerous rumors were circulating without any official statement from the party and described such reports as source-based attempts to malign the organization. Sule reiterated that her party remains committed to the INDIA alliance and confirmed that it had received no proposal from anyone regarding joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Responding to questions about Jayant Patil's meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Supriya Sule dismissed attempts to draw political conclusions from routine interactions. She pointed out that she had recently shared lunch with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and had also met Samajwadi Party leaders Dimple Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav, emphasizing that meetings between political leaders should not automatically be interpreted as indications of political negotiations.
The sequence of political developments has intensified speculation over the future of the Nationalist Congress Party and its role in Maharashtra politics. With internal dissent, reports of possible defections, and discussions involving leaders from rival factions, the coming weeks could prove decisive for both the ruling alliance and the opposition as the state's political landscape enters another period of uncertainty.
